The Oakton Cougars are off to a winning 2-1 start under first-year head coach Brian Slay, above.

Three games into the 2024 high-school football season and the Oakton Cougars already have bettered their win total from last season and matched the number of wins for the 2022 campaign.

Under new head coach Brian Slay, Oakton improved to 2-1 this fall with its second straight victory, routing the visiting Woodson Cavaliers, 42-7, Sept. 13 in non-district action.

Oakton led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and 35-7 at halftime over 0-3 Woodson.

The 42 points were the most Oakton scored in a game since totaling 48 in a week four victory in the 2017 season.

“We came out blazing from the start and I was pleased how we played in the first half,” Slay said. “We scored on some big plays, so now we need to do better finishing some drives.”

One of those leading Oakton in the win over Woodson was quarterback Jack Martin. He was 10 of 16 passing for 172 yards, throwing two touchdown passes.

Running the ball well were Ryan Henriques with 84 yards on 11 carries and a TD and Isaiah Coleman with 65 yards and a score.

Brayden Vazquez (75 yards) and Maxwell Barker (66 yards) each caught two passes, including for a touchdown each.

Evan Volciak kicked all six extra points.

On defense, Henriques had a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown and Deylen Jones had a big game, stripping the ball from a player and running 50 yards for a score, intercepting two passes and making nine total tackles, including seven solo.

Quinn Smith and Connor Tapp also had interceptions.

Woodson turned the ball over six times and had just 145 total yards, 78 which  were rushing.

“Defensively that was our best game of the three,” Slay said. “We stopped the run well.”

Oakton hosts the 0-2 West Springfield Spartans in another non-district game at 7 p.m. Sept. 20.
