Marshall sets single-game scoring record in opening victory

Statesmen score in various manners to amass 79 points in blowout win

The Marshall Statesmen scored a single-game team record 79 points in their 79-6 season-opening victory over the visiting Annandale Atoms on Aug. 30. The high-school football team’s previous record was 63 points scored against the Wakefield Warriors in 2022.

Nine different players scored touchdowns in the 79-point performance.

Ethan Lebkisher forced and recovered a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, then scored on a 14-yard run on the second play from scrimmage to give the Statesmen a 6-0 lead. Marshall threw only one pass in the game, a 27-yard scoring toss from junior Michael Spriggs to Peyton Lubbe.

Marshall led 43-0 after the first quarter and 65-6 at halftime.

Spriggs also had two short touchdown runs.

Defensive end Oliver Smith forced a turnover on a fumble one play, and tackled an Annandale runner for a safety on another.

Marshall’s Isaac Rudy scored on a 22-yard fumble return and junior Joshua Paine returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Also scoring touchdowns were Brandon Kitchel and Max Carnevale, Alex Lim and Will Jacobi.

Sultan Nazary lead Marshall in rushing with 74 yards, Lebkisher had 67, Spriggs 39 and Kitchel 33.

Kickers Randy Park and Jacob Cote combined to convert nine extra points.
