Langley blanks Oakton in season opener for each football team

Saxons gain 313 total yards in non-district victory

In the Langley Saxons’ 17-0 season-opening home win over the young Oakton Cougars on Aug. 30, Robert Roncskevitz ran for two short touchdowns and Mateo Arboleda booted a 23-yard field goal and two extra points to account for the scoring in the high-school football game. Langley led 14-0 at halftime.

Roncskevitz rushed for 99 yards and quarterback Cole Samburg ran for 35 and passed for 130. Jackson Popovich ran for 33 yards. Elias Dyrud and Vincent Shen each caught three passes.

Langley had 313 total yards and 16 first downs and Oakton 123 total yards.

On defense, Roncskevitz, Wyatt Kenny and Cannon Clarke were among the tackling leaders. Roncskevitz and Clarke had sacks.

Oakton’s lineup included just four players with significant varsity experience.

“We played young and nervous, we showed our youth and we didn’t tackle well,” first-year Oakton coach Brian Slay said. “We did play hard and we kept playing, so I saw what we can be.”

For Oakton, Jack Martin completed eight pass for 100 yards and Ryan Henriques was a rushing leader with 22 yards. P.J. Schwartz caught four passes for 66 yards.

On defense for Oakton, Deylen Jones made 11 tackles, with two for losses, Charlie McArter had eight tackles and two assists, Henriques had eight tackles and two assists and Connor Tapp made four tackles and had one interception and a sack.
