Potential tropical storm looms and could impact N.Va. next week

A weather-maker that could hit Florida’s west coast as a tropical storm before turning eastbound is worth watching for potential impacts to Northern Virginia.

The National Hurricane Center projects expect the storm, currently over Cuba with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph, is likely to enter the Gulf of Mexico, increasing in intensity as it is fueled by the warm waters, then spiral northeast over the weekend, re-emerging near the Florida/Georgia Atlantic coast border to come up the Atlantic seaboard.

Based on the current projected track, it could be still could be at tropical-storm strength as it runs up the North Carolina-South Carolina coast Tuesday [8/6] into Wednesday.

After that, impacts of Virginia, including the local area, could be possible.
