Drenching rains could come next week from tropical storm

It remains too early to tell how much impact local region will get from looming weathermaker

Aug. 3, 2024, update from the National Hurricane Center shows the likelihood of rainfall associated with a storm currently forming in the Gulf of Mexico. At the moment, it projects the local region could receive 1 to 2 inches of rain as the storm arrives.

Its trajectory and "oomph" factor remain a work in progress, but the Northern Virginia region should gear up for the potential of, at the very least, lots of rain next week in connection with the developing tropical storm.

The storm is expected to intensify, move through Florida and then up the Atlantic seaboard over the next week. While the coastlines of Georgia and North and South Carolina may pick up an intense amount of rain and gusty winds, the timeline remains too iffy to address impacts in the Washington area.

But early projections from the National Hurricane Center do suggest the Washington area may pick up significant rainfall, even though the area could be on the periphery of the storm.

Before its arrival, there will be another blast of very hot air in coming days, with the thermometer again flirting with the 100-degree mark.
