Yorktown runs and throws the ball well in opening-game victory

Patriots score 30 straight points to build 37-7 lead

It took an extra day – because storms postponed their opening game – but the Yorktown Patriots began the 2024 varsity football season Aug. 30 with a lopsided victory.

Yorktown won comfortably on the road, defeating the Woodson Cavaliers, 44-27, in a non-district contest in Fairfax.

For Yorktown, the Patriots never trailed, taking the lead for good at 14-7 on a three-yard first-quarter run by Jordan Romero Gutierrez and one of Max Yoon’s five extra points. The lead swelled to 37-7 in the third quarter, and later 44-14.

“We got a lead, then gave up some stuff in the second half, but a win is a win,” Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson said. “I like the way we moved the ball some.”

Yorktown quarterback Drew Morgan was 12 of 20 passing for 262 yards and he threw touchdown passes of 20 yards each to Max Troiano and Finn Luca. The signal caller also ran nine yards for another score.

“Drew has worked hard and he had a good game,” Hanson said. “He had that nice running touchdown that I liked. He’s not slow, so he’s a good runner, and we want him to run.”

Runningback Coby Casalengo had two short touchdown runs and Yoon booked a 32-yard field goal. Casalengo ran for 115 yards and Nate Randles rushed for 109. Finn Luca caught four passes for 109 yards, Troiano caught three for 71 and Brady Owens three for 43. Casalengo and Sammy Keiser also had catches.

On defense for Yorktown, Jake Rucker and Owen Woodward had interceptions. Those two were tackling leaders along with Bobby Shea.
