Washington-Liberty head coach Josh Shapiro talks to his players during a scrimmage against Chantilly prior to its win in the football teams first regular-season game.

The Washington-Liberty Generals rolled up 421 total yards in their 49-13 opening-season victory over the visiting Edison Eagles on Aug. 30. The Generals also defeated Edison by a similar 45-13 score in last season’s opener. The first-week victory was the third in a row for Washington-Liberty.

“I thought we played pretty well and moved the ball,” Generals coach Josh Shapiro said.

The Generals gained 184 yards rushing and quarterback Matthew Abramson completed 12 passes for 237 yards and threw three scoring throws.

Two of the scoring passes went to Jon Malatesta, who had four catches for 117 yards. Mikey Barber (four catches 73 yards) caught the other TD pass. Sean Guffey had three catches for 46 yards and Luke Jones one for 19.

In the running game, Brayden Black rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns and Ben Hughes had a short scoring run. Dylan Guzman-Orellana ran for 45 yards and Abramson for 13.

“Brayden is a tough core-strength strong runner,” Shapiro said. “Matthew threw well, our receivers got open and made some plays after the catch.”

On defense for W-L, Ian Crowley made eight tackles and Zack Meehan had an interception and made multiple tackles. Other tackling leaders were Black, Jasper Dennis, Henry Fonseca-Cruz, Maximus De La Vega and Jackson Bolfek.

Felipe Dieguez kicked seven extra points.
