The Marshall Statesmen hosted their initial golf tournament.

There were no local champions but plenty of top area finishers at the initial Statesmen Invitational golf tournament hosted by the Marshall High School team.

The 18-hole, 16-team event was held Aug. 15 at Bristow Manor Golf Club in Prince William County.

The McLean Highlanders were the highest finishing local team, tying for third with Gainesville with a 314 score. The Wakefield Warriors were fifth with 315 and the Washington-Liberty Generals eighth with 327. Host Marshall placed 13th with 343.

Independence High won with 283, with Riverside second at 298.

“It was a beautiful day. My plan is to do this once again next year at Bristow,” said Marshall coach and tournament director John Windt.

Marshall joined the list of a number of local teams that host early-season tournaments. McLean, the Madison Warhawks and Yorktown Patriots are three others, with those events each completed a few days earlier.

The local golfer with the lowest individual score was McLean’s J.T. Deevy, who tied for fourth with a 73. Wakefield’s Philip Verghese shot 76 to tie for 11th. Washington-Liberty’s Emmett Spence and Colin Hanley each shot 78. Wakefield’s Andrew Middleton and Beckett Hampton had 79s, as did Madison’s  Ryan Moseley.

Also for McLean, Kyle Li and Kevin Ren each shot 80, Lauren Wood 81 and Olivia Wood 88.

For Wakefield, Tully Andress and Miles Maravilla had 81s.

In addition for Washington-Liberty, James Hall shot 84, Alex Frymoyer 87 and Malia Perry 90.

For Marshall, Isabella Zhou had the lowest score with an 80. Owen McCarton shot 86 and Topher Higginson 87.

Madison’s team score was 345. Jack Cilman had an 87, Ashlyn Choi 88 and Sohan Mehta and Gavin Neville 91s.

The Oakton Cougars shot 348, with Ryan Yoon having a low score of 85 and Pierce Strong 86.

The individual champion was Neil Kulkarni of Independence with a 67. Teammates Keya Naik and Jake Davis were second and third with scores of 70 and 72, respectfully. Brothers John and Will Carlin each shot 73 to lead Riverside and tie for fourth.

NOTE: The tournament included all six Concorde District teams, among them Madison and Oakton, making the event a preview of sorts for that league’s postseason tournament at the end of September. Of the six, Westfield had the lowest score at 330.
