For one month of the year, members of the Vienna Police Department are allowed to grow facial hair. It is part of a fund-raiser aimed at eradicating prostate cancer.

The Vienna Police Department raised $3,052.80, tops in the first-responder category, as part of a fund-raising effort in support of Zero Cancer, which provides educational materials about prostate cancer to men and their families and offers screenings for men who otherwise would be unable to afford them.

Vienna Police Chief James Morris relaxed the department’s no-beard policy for the month of November so officers could participate in the annual “No Shave November” initiative.

“Over the past three years, our department and community have come  together to raise awareness for this important cause,” Morris said. “We are in the safety and prevention business, and our hope is that our participation raises awareness and encourages men in our community to get regular, potentially life-saving screenings.”

Nearly 250,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the U.S. each year, and the illness is very treatable if diagnosed early.
