A newly approved stream-restoration project will stabiliize stream banks and prevent erosion along 1,900 linear feet of Bear Branch in southwest Vienna.

The Vienna Town Council moved ahead Aug. 26 with a nearly $2 million project to restore about 1,900 linear feet of Bear Branch stream at Southside Park.

The initiative, which also will stabilize eroded stream banks, will take place between Cottage Street, S.W., and Interstate 66.

KBS Earthworks Inc. will perform the work at a budget cost of up to $1.97 million, which includes a 20-percent contingency allowance.

This project long has been in the works, with an initial funding agreement between Vienna and Fairfax County signed in August 2019. Under that pact, the county will provide up to $1.02 million for the initiative and a matching amount would be obtained via a grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s Stormwater Local Assistance Fund.

The project will take about one year to complete, said Vienna Public Works Director Brad Baer.
