The Fairfax County Police Department’s Motor Carrier Safety Unit last year addressed concerns related to 559 commercial motor vehicles during 15 static inspections and training exercises throughout the county.

These operations found 2,298 violations, placed 523 vehicles out of service and resulted in the issuance of 1,194 summonses, police said.

The Motor Carrier Safety Unit has existed for more than 40 years. Officers assigned to this section enforce federal motor-carrier-safety regulations, hazardous-material rules, the Virginia State Code and the Fairfax County Code as it pertains to commercial motor vehicles.

The division collaborates with other agencies, such as the Department of Transportation, to ensure compliance with regulations set forth by local, state and federal authorities.

The unit consists of one supervisor, four full-time officers, and six supplemental officers. These officers undergo extensive training to be certified as motor-carrier-safety officers.

All of the unit’s officers have commercial driver’s licenses and are responsible for driving the police department’s command vehicles.
