Yorktown coach Chris Williams gives pointers as his players warmup for the Patriot Girls Invitational.

The inaugural Patriot Girls Invitational golf tournament, hosted by Yorktown High School, consisted of 36 golfers representing  nine teams.

The one-day, 18-hole competition was played Aug. 16 on the Oaks Course at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton.

Yorktown had two teams entered, with its A team shooting 354 to finish third, led by an 81 from Caitlin Wright. She placed sixth in the individual scoring. Ginger Beall had an 87 for the A team and Maddie Cameron a 91.

Yorktown’s B team had a 376 score, with Katherine Snyder having the lowest total with a 90, Riley Scheffel shooting 92 and Claire Scott 94.

Langley easily won the tournament with a 301 score, highlighted by a 69 from freshman and individual champion Sophie Cao. Cailyn Park of Fairfax shot 71, helping her team finish second with a 340 total.

Robinson had a 359 team score and Thomas Jefferson shot 371.

Sophia Sadler was the lone player for Wakefield entered, shooting 83 to tie for seventh.

Yorktown hosted a much larger 20-plus team co-ed high school tournament earlier in August. The school’s initial girls golf tourney developed as a result of that 10-year event. There are few similar girls-only high-school tournaments held in Northern Virginia.

“Hopefully this [girls] tournament will grow as the co-ed one has,” said Yorktown coach Chris Williams, who runs both events.

Williams said he was hoping to have some 60 players for the inaugural event.

“We probably should have held it a week earlier, and we likely would have had more players if we had done that,” Williams said. “It’s something to think about for next year.”
