Wakefield High football team opens season with a home loss

Runningback Isiah Ledbetter has big game with 142 yards rushing

The Wakefield Warriors opened their 2024 high-school football season with a loss, but senior runningback Isiah Ledbetter had a productive game in defeat.

Ledbetter rushed for 142 yards on 17 carries, including an 80-yard scoring run in the Warriors’ 29-6 home loss to the Fairfax Lions in non-district play. He also caught one pass for 41 yards.

Ledbetter’s scoring run around the left end was helped by blocks from linemen Gabriel Macias, Ben Mitzen, Abraham Velis and Jeremiah McCray.

Also for Wakefield, C.J. Sewell had three catches for 16 yards, Andrew Walton had a catch and sophomore quarterback Judah Connor passed for 120 yards. He also had a 15-yard scramble for a first down.

On defense for Wakefield, Sean Perry made 9.5 tackles, with two for losses, one  of those being a sack. Alijah Cole had 7.5 tackles (1.5 for losses) and Daniel Bryan had two tackles for losses.

Wakefield hosts Anacostia from D.C. in its second game, Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. Anacostia lost its season opener to Woodson of D.C., 20-6.
