As has been the case for more than three decades, the Yorktown Patriots continued their reign of power with another victory in the annual Arlington County high-school golf championship match.

Yorktown won this season’s three-team, 9-hole event on the Hains Point Golf Course at East Potomac Park in D.C. with a 146 team score.

Of the Patriots’ six players in the match, five carded scores in the 30s, led by a 1-under-par 35 from junior Jack Freeman.

“Our players played pretty well,” Yorktown coach Chris Williams said. “Any time a team counts four scores in the 30s, that’s pretty good.”

Shooting 36 for Yorktown were junior Nick Senkus and senior Taylor Mitchell. Senior Charlie Lamb shot 37, junior Luke Sanne 39 and junior Austin Barbieri 41.

The county title was Yorktown’s second straight and 35th of 37 dating back to 1986. At one point Yorktown had won 31 county titles in a row, until the Wakefield Warriors snapped that streak with a playoff victory over Yorktown in 2018.

The Washington-Liberty Generals finished second in this year’s match with 159 total and were led by a 2-under 34 by match medalist Finn Watson.

Also for W-L, James Hall and Emmett Spence shot 41, Grant Gutowski and Colin Hanleg each had 43 and Quinn Breed 46.

Wakefield was third with a 161 score. Tully Andress shot 36 to post Wakefield’s lowest score and Beckett Hampton had a 39. Andrew Middleton, Sophia Sadler and Ari Liebman shot 43 and Ryan Baird 50.

In the 9-hole B-team county match the same day at Hains Point, Yorktown won with a 147 score, W-L was second and Wakefield third.

In recent Liberty District varsity dual matches so far this season, Yorktown and Wakefield each defeated Herndon, with Hampton shooting 39 to lead the Warriors in the victory.

Yorktown’s victories over Wakefield and Washington-Liberty in the county championship also counted as district dual-match wins. So the Patriots began the week with a 3-0 record in district play.

All three teams resume district dual matches this week, with Yorktown having an upcoming showdown with defending regular-season district winner Langley, also the seven-time defending Virginia High School League Class 6 state champion.
