Yorktown High School head football coach Bruce Hanson and the Patriots won on the road in non-district action the night of Sept. 29.

The Yorktown Patriots (4-2) snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating the host Centreville Wildcats, 28-21, Sept. 29 in non-district high-school football action.

Yorktown led 14-7 at halftime, scored two second-half touchdowns to take an 28-21 lead then recovered an onside kick in the game’s final 30 seconds to secure the win.

“We had to work for that win,” Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson said. “We hit a couple of big plays that helped –  otherwise we struggled some offensively. We defensed them pretty well.”

Three of those big plays were a 36-yard touchdown run by Chris Montecino, a 32-yard scoring pass from Hudson Greene to a wide-open Owen Woodward in the middle of the field, and Drew Morgan’s nine-yard TD pass to Max Troiano.

The other scoring came on Coby Casalengo’s one-yard run, a two-point conversion pass from Morgan to Adam Rafi, and Max Yoon’s extra points.

Casalengo rushed for 83 yards and Montecino 69. Green was 5 of 10 passing for 56 yards and Morgan 3 of 7 for 29. Woodward caught three passes for 40 yards, Rafi and Montecino each caught two, and Troiano and Casalengo one each.

The remaining four games for Yorktown are against Liberty District opponents. The Patriots are 1-1 in district play and face the host and undefeated McLean Highlanders (5-0, 1-0) on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.

• The Wakefield Warriors (0-6) remained winless with a 45-7 home loss to the Westfield Bulldogs (4-1) on Sept. 29 in non-district high-school football action.

In the loss, quarterback Peyton Boroff completed six passes for 35 yards and Natan Daniel and Judah Connor completed two each. Matthew Johnson caught two passes for 71 yards and Josh Cohen also caught two.

Wakefield’s touchdown came on a 67-yard pass from Connor to Johnson. Josh Bornfield kicked the extra point.

Andrew Walton had an interception for Wakefield.

Next up for Wakefield is a Liberty District away game against the Langley Saxons on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
