Yorktown football team runs the ball well again, improves to 2-0

Patriots' passing game was better in the victory

In a similar manner to their opening-game victory, the Yorktown Patriots repeated some of those performances Aug. 31 in week-two action to improve to 2-0 with a non-district home win in high-school football action.

In a 37-7 win over Jackson-Reed from D.C., the Patriots rushed for 274 yards, with Owen Woodward leading the way with 103 yards and a touchdown, Coby Casalengo 80 and a TD and Jordan Romero 25 and a TD. Keegan Westhoff and Chris Montecino also had rushing yards.

Hudson Greene passed for 127 yards and two touchdowns and Drew Morgan threw for 24.

Michael Merritt (one touchdown) and Montecino each had two catches and Finn Luca had a 78-yard touchdown catch. Woodward, Max Troiano, Casalengo and Adam Rafi all had one catch.

Max Yoon kicked four extra points and booted a 27-yard field goal.

“We have been able to run the ball and we passed better tonight,” Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson said. “We have been working on our passing game, and we still have work to do there.”

On defense for Yorktown, Henry Southard recovered two fumbles and Ethan Blackwell and Troiano (sack) one each. Merritt, Nick Hornyak, Valentino Antoine and Kidus Yinsu all had sacks.

In week one, Yorktown also ran the ball well in a 21-14 home victory over W.T. Woodson.

• The Wakefield Warriors fell to 0-2 with a 35-14 home loss to the Hayfield Hawks on Aug. 31.

In the loss for Wakefield, quarterback Peyton Boroff completed 14 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown pass to Cameron Fields. Matthew Johnson also caught a scoring pass.

Bryant Cruz-Lemus caught three passes for 96 yards, and Andrew Mason, Danny Bryant and Fields all had one catch.

Fields was the leading rusher with 48 yards, Mason had 19 and Michael Hutchinson 15.

On defense, Andrew Walton and Mason had interceptions.

Luis Pinto kicked two extra points.

Wakefield returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Yorktown in an all-Arlington clash.
