Yorktown field hockey team finishes 13-1 in regular-season

Patriots go 6-0 in Liberty District, earn tourney's top seed

With a 6-0 home slaughter-rule victory over the Herndon Hornets, the Yorktown Patriots finished their regular-season girls field hockey schedule with a 13-1 record and undefeated 6-0 mark in the Liberty District.

Yorktown now is the top seed and two-time defending champion in the district tournament and earns a berth to play in the 6D North Region high-school tourney. The Patriots also are the two-time defending region champs.

In the win over Herndon, Olivia Nelsen scored two goals. Alexis Williams, Anna Menard, Margaret O’Kieffe and Kiran Friemel scored the others. Elena Reiser also took multiple shots on goal.

The match ended when O’Kieffe scored the sixth goal in the fourth quarter.

The night before the Herndon game, Yorktown blanked host and Arlington rival Washington-Liberty, 1-0.

The two victories gave the Patriots a10-match winning streak entering the postseason. Yorktown shut out its final five regular-season opponents, outscoring those teams 14-0. Overall, Yorktown has 11 shutouts this season.

The team’s lone loss was a 1-0 setback against Stone Ridge of Bethesda, Md.

Junior midfielder Olivia Stafford is Yorktown’s leading scorer with nine goals and four assists and Williams has eight goals and four assists.

“Our team has a large distribution of scoring, which showcases our ability to play as a team and utilize multiple players,” Yorktown coach Olivia Shipley said.

Reiser has five goals and six assists; Menard has four goals and four assists; Nelsen has three goals and an assist; Maddie Nimerala has three goals; Piper Gill has two goals and one assist; and O’Kieffe (one assist), Friemel, Paige Baskin and Bryce Christiansen all have one goal.

Yorktown’s goalie is sophomore Sarah Kinzer, leading a defense that has allowed just six goals.

Williams will play field hockey in college at the University of Pennsyslvania, Reiser at Georgetown University.

Yorktown won the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state tournament in 2021 and finished second in the state last fall, losing to Fairfax in the title match.

Yorktown opened its 2023 season with a 3-2 overtime win over Fairfax, then blanked 2020 state champion Madison, 1-0, in its second match.

Also this season, Yorktown has a win over 2019 state champion Langley.

Other seniors this season for Yorktown in addition to Williams, Nelsen and O’Kieffe are Gill, Olivia Juergens, Norah Whitehead and goalie Dina Nguyen.

Washington-Liberty finished the regular season with a 6-11 overall record and a 2-4 district mark.

With one regular-season match remaining, the Wakefield Warriors had a 10-6 overall record and were 2-4 in the Liberty District. Two of the losses were to Arlington rivals Yorktown and Washington-Liberty.
