Through the early season, the Yorktown Patriots have done what they have accomplished the past few campaigns – established themselves as one of the top boys high-school lacrosse teams in the region and state.

Entering spring break, Yorktown had a 5-1 overall record with five straight wins and was yet to play a Liberty District match.

The Patriots’ most recent victory was an 8-1 road triumph over the defending Virginia High School League Class 6 state champion Madison Warhawks. Yorktown lost to Madison in last year’s state-tournament semifinals after defeating the Warhawks days earlier in the title match of the 6D North Region tourney.

Other key wins for Yorktown so far have been over the Robinson Rams, 9-8, and the Oakton Cougars, 12-6. Robinson and Oakton are perennial region and state contenders.

Yorktown’s lone loss was to private-school The Heights, 10-8, in the Patriots’ season opener.

With a number of key returning players this spring, Yorktown is expected to be a district, region and state contenders again. Yorktown won the 2021 state championship with a 16-0 record.

Hudson Greene, Miles Fang and Jack Martinez are among Yorktown’s top returners.

Yorktkown coach Greg Beer has said the Patriots have the potential to be a top team again this spring.

In the win against Madison, Greene had two goals and two assists, Martinez had a goal and Fang handled many faceoffs. Also in that win, Will Hock scored two goals and gathered four ground balls, Nathan Graves had two goals, Garrett Wing had a goal and four assists and Gray Macaulay added one assist.

Yorktown goalie Hayden Whittington made nine saves to earn the victory, and Evan Beeman had four ground balls.

Hock had four goals, Greene scored three and Wing had four assists against Oakton, with Whittington making 10 saves in goal.

Through six matches, Greene is the team’s top scorer with 17 goals and 13 assists. Hock has 14 goals, Wing has 10 goals and 18 assists, Martinez has seven goals and Ryan Boehk has five.

Yorktown’s other wins were over Centreville, 15-6, and Dominion, 18-6.

The Patriots open their Liberty District schedule with consecutive matches April 10 and 11 against Arlington rivals Wakefield and Washington-Liberty.

• The Washington-Liberty boys entered spring break with a 4-2 record and 1-0 district mark. The Generals defeated Wakefield, 13-8, for their district victory, and their most recent triumph was over Mount Vernon, 15-0.

• The Wakefield boys also have a 4-2 record with recent wins over Hylton, 12-6, and Lewis, 16-5.

• In private-school boys lacrosse, the Bishop O’Connell Knights had a 2-5 record when the week began. Victories were over John Paul the Great and Trinity Episcopal.

• In girls high-school lacrosse, the defending Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state champion Yorktown Patriots entered spring break with a 1-5 overall record. They have played a difficult schedule.

Yorktown’s win was over Robinson, 14-7. The Patriots have lost to perennial powers Madison, Oakton, Centreville, Battlefield and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes.

The Washington-Liberty girls are 3-3 with wins over Lake Braddock, Justice and Wakefield, which is 2-5 with wins over Lewis and Annandale.

In private-school girls lacrosse, the Bishop O’Connell Knights began the week with a 3-3 overall mark with wins over Washington-Liberty, St. Mary’s Ryken and John Paul the Great.

Some of the lacrosse teams this week will be participating in a few spring-break tournament matches. Then most begin district and conference play starting next week.
