The Washington-Liberty Generals are scheduled to open their 2023 varsity high-school football season on Friday night, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. on the road in Franconia against the Edison Eagles in a non-district game.
Based on last-season’s results, the early-season schedule is favorable for the Generals. Their first three games are against opponents that had so-so regular-season records last fall, Edison included.
Washington-Liberty faces Annandale in its second game, then Lewis (1-9 last season) in its third. Annandale was 4-6 last fall.
Overall, six of W-L’s opponents this season had losing records last fall.
“We have moved the ball well in our scrimmages and we are still working on our defense,” Washington-Liberty coach Josh Shapiro said.
The Generals were 5-6 last season, earned a 6D North Region tournament playoff berth and tied for second in the Liberty District with a 4-2 mark. Washington-Liberty lost to champion Madison in a first-round region playoff game to end its 2022 campaign.
The Generals’ fourth regular-season game this fall will be against the host Yorktown Patriots in an all-Arlington contest. The date of that rivalry game is much sooner this season. For decades, the squads met in the final regular-season contest.
This season the Generals end the regular season with a home game against the Wakefield Warriors, the second of its public-school Arlington rivals.
Jonathan Bhojwani will start at quarterback for W-L with Anthony Lewis and Ben Hughes as runningbacks and Jackson Nowinski a top returning wide receiver. Hughes and Sean Guffey will be top players on defense, with Marcelo Carrasquillo the kicker. Edward Barker and Sebastian Giesecke are top linemen.
