The visiting Washington-Liberty Generals scored early and often against the host Edison Eagles on Aug. 25 in their 45-13 opening-game blowout victory in non-district high-school football action on Friday Aug. 25.

The Generals led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, then 31-13 at halftime.

“We really grinded and worked hard in the off-season, and tonight that paid off,” W-L coach Josh Shapiro said.

Washington-Liberty gained 368 total yards in the win, including 227 through the air on 14 of 18 completions by quarterback Jon Bhojwani, who threw four touchdown passes and no interceptions. The Generals did not have a turnover.

“He was dead on and precise with his passes,” Shapiro said of Bhojwani. “And our receivers were on point. We were rolling on offense.”

Jackson Nowinski had six catches for 97 yards and a TD for W-L, Joseph Cordaro had four for 34 and a score, Jon Malatesta had two for 27 and a touchdown and Luke Harnisfeger had a 71-yard scoring strike on a deep pass. Brayden Black and Anthony Louis had a catch each.

On the ground, Louis ran for 73 yards, Ben Hughes for 41 and a touchdown, and Dylan Guzman had 38.

“Hughes was a real bulldog running the ball,” Shapiro said.

On special teams, Nowinski had a 69-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Marcelo Carrasquillo booted a 44-yard field goal to make the score 31-13. He also kicked six extra points.

On defense for the Generals, Connor Hurren and Ryan Date had interceptions, with Date also having two tackles for losses, along with Hughes.

Among other tackling leaders were Hurren, Louis, Hughes, Black, Sean Guffey, Roman Falvo, Zach Meehan, Bryce Johnson, Jackson Bolfek and William Clarke.
