The Bishop O'Connell Knights lost to St. Mary's Ryken, 28-0, in a conference game on Oct. 14.

The Wakefield Warriors had their closest game of the high-school football season when they lost to the visiting Marshall Statesmen, 21-3, in an Oct. 14 afternoon Liberty District contest.

The winless Warriors (0-8, 0-4) trailed just 6-0 at halftime, and got on the scoreboard with a 32-yard field goal by Josh Bronfield in the third period, cutting the lead to 6-3.

For Wakefield, Michael Hutchinson rushed for 33 yards and quarterback Payton Boroff was 10 of 21 passing for 94 yards. Bryant Cruz-Lemus and Matthew Johnson each caught three passes.

On defense, Cruz-Lemus had four interceptions and recovered a fumble. His interception returns were for 26 and 13 yards. One of his interceptions was in the end zone.

* The Bishop O'Connell Knights (3-4, 0-1) were blanked by the visiting St. Mary's Ryken Knights, 28-0, in a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference football game on Oct. 14 in Arlington.

O'Connell was missing two injured starting offensive linemen for the high-school game, and fell behind early.

Ryken improved to 2-0 in the WCAC.

O'Connell had 219 total yards in the game, of which 189 were passing. Quarterback Henry Behrens completed multiple passes, many to Aidan Joseph. The Knights turned the ball over three times.

* The Washington-Liberty Generals (6-1, 2-1) had a bye this past week. They returned to action on Friday night, Oct. 20 against the host McLean Highlanders (6-1, 2-2) in Liberty District action at 7 p.m. The Generals will be tied for first in the district in the loss column.

Since taking over as W-L’s head coach in 2007, Josh Shapiro has played against five different head coaches for the McLean team. That includes current Highlanders' head coach Joe Cockerham.

In those previous 16 meetings between the teams, the Generals have won nine times, and six of the last eight, under Shapiro, including a 48-13 victory last fall.

Entering this weekend’s contest, the Generals will be in a tie for first place in the district in the loss column.
