Wakefield boys, W-L girls teams win Arlington track & field meets

Each squad had top relays and multiple individual winners

Washington-Liberty's 4x400 relay finished first at the county meet. The runners were Thalia Lynch, Morgan Brown, Therese Johansson and Lily Kuzdzal.

With lofty team scores and multiple individual champions, the Wakefield Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals teams respectively won the boys and girls Arlington County outdoor track and field championship meets.

The high-school competition was held at Wakefield (mostly in the rain) on March 25. The Wakefield boys won with 163 points and the Washington-Liberty girls with 200.5. The W-L boys were second with 138 and the Wakefield girls were runner-up with 173.75.

“It was an interesting meet with the weather and the rain, but Wakefield did a good job running the meet,” W-L coach John Bacon said. “Our girls did a great job in trying conditions and they hung in there.”

Leading the Washington-Liberty girls was a busy Amel Male. She won the  high jump at 4-feet, 4-inches, was first in the discus (105.5), and was second in the long jump, triple jump and shot put.

The Generals’ Morgan Brown won the 200-meter dash (27.19) and was second in the 100, Thalia Lynch won the 100 (13.13), Alba Edsall won the 3,200 (12:46.61), the 4x400 relay was first (4:14.77), the 4x800 was second and the 4x100 third.

The winning relay consisted of Lynch, Brown, Therese Johansson and Lily Kuzdzal.

For the Wakefield boys, Ovando Thelwell was a double winner in the long jump (19-41/2) and triple jump (40-9) and was seventh in the high jump.

Also for the Warriors, Ben Chapuis was  second in the high and triple jumps and fifth in the 3,200; Harrison Greenberg was second in the 1,600 and third in the 800; Antonio Smith was third in the triple jump and 200 and fifth in the 100; Michael Hutchinson was third in the discus and fifth in the shot; Justin Diller was second in the long jump and sixth in the 300 hurdles; Liam Keish was  fifth in the 1,600 and sixth in the 800; the 4x800 relay won in 9:05.66; and the 4x400 was third.

The 4x800 relay consisted of Keish, Greenberg, Eben Zimmerman and Logan Ward.

For the Wakefield girls, Elizabeth Coe won the 800 (2:22.93) and the 1,600 (5:32.36), Grace Armitage won the 300 hurdles (50.15), Alexis Reeves was first in the 400 (1:03.45), the 4x800 relay won in 10:32.48 and the 4x100 was first in 53.98.

The 4x800 relay consisted of Coe, Addison Young, Quincy Daigle and Lilly Armstrong. Making up the 4x100 was Kennedy McClary, Madeleine Wearing, Dorothy Edson and Ashley Tomlinson.

For the second-place Washington-Liberty boys, Ian Naff won the 100 (11.4) and 400 (52.23) races, and Jonah Friedman won the shot (49-31/2) and discus (131-5).

For the third-place Yorktown boys, Dylan Minsker won the high jump (5-10), Jack Levine was first in the 800 (2:01.28) and Matthew Pedicano won the 3,200 (10:18.42).

For the fourth-place Bishop O’Connell boys, Anthony Lenzini won the 1,600 in 4:34.08 – a strong showing after missing most of the indoor season with an injury.

The Yorktown girls finished third and the O’Connell girls fourth.

Prior to the county meet, Naff participated in the Adidas Indoor Nationals high-school championships in Virginia Beach and won the 400 in 49.63 in the Elite Boys Division. The senior finished fourth in the 200 in 22.27.

Washington-Liberty’s girls 4x100 relay placed fifth in the meet .

At Class 6 the indoor state track and field meet during the winter season, Naff was second in the state in the 500 as the ninth seed.

“He just keeps getting better,” Bacon said about Naff.
