Three Arlington dive teams open summer season with victories

Three of the four Arlington summer diving teams in the Northern Virginia Swimming League won their opening meets of the 2023 season with week-day victories on Tuesday, June 20.

 In Division II action, host Overlee topped Hunt Valley, 38-34, and Donaldson Run outscored  visiting Hayfield Farm, 50-20.

In Division III,  Dominion Hills won big, 50-21 over host Fairfax Station.

In Division VII, Arlington Forest was the host of its opening meet and lost to Orange Hunt, 39-32.

Winning their age divisions for Overlee were Emmie Waltrup (freshman girls, 65.5), CiCi Yen (junior girls, 155.3), Stella Barclay (intermediate girls, 157.4), Haynes Deegan (intermediate boys, 120.2) and Michayla Eisenberg (senior girls, 233.0).

During the high-school season, Eisenberg was a top diver for Flint Hill School, winning a Division I private-school state championship for the Huskies as a junior diver.

Winners for Donaldson Run were Pippa Chin-Fatt (freshman girls, 70.35), Will McCool (freshman boys, 64.85), Lily Klein (junior girls, 100.45), Eli Chin-Fatt (junior boys, 92.2), Michael Staren (intermediate boys, 108.55), Emma Webb (senior girls, 142.3) and Porter Parish (senior boys, 205.0).

Finishing first for Dominion Hills were Toby Chen (freshman boys, 65.5), Savannah Potter (junior girls 109.95), Logan DiBenigno (junior boys, 110.6), Hannah Ax (intermediate girls, 137.55), Charlie Morrison (intermediate boys, 119.75) and Ellie Joyce (senior girls, 218.95).

Six Dominion Hills divers also finished second in the meet. They were Thomas Dombrowski (freshman boys), Helen Butler (junior girls), Christopher Crepeau (junior boys), Ian Bradley (intermediate boys), Riley Shelton (senior girls) and Luke DiBenigno (senior boys.)

The team had divers finish first, second and third in the senior girls division.

During the winter high-school season, Joyce was a top diver for Washington-Liberty. She won the Liberty District title and was second in the 6D North Region championships, then second in the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 girls state meet. She won a state title in a previous season. She will dive in college at the University of North Carolina.

For Arlington Forest, placing first were Claire Polsinelli (junior girls, 75.4) and Quinn Coogen (intermediate boys, 122.6).

In an all-Arlington week-two meet, Donaldson Run was scheduled to host Overlee on June 27. In other meets that day, Dominion Hills was scheduled to visit Highlands of McLean and Arlington Forest also was away at Rutherford in Fairfax.

The five-week regular season continues through July 17, followed by the season-ending individual all-star meet on Sunday, July 30 at Oakton pool with an 8 a.m. start.

The annual Wally Martin meet is Sunday, July 9 at Oak Marr pool in Oakton, with the Cracker Jack meet Sunday, July 16 at Ravensworth Farm pool in Springfield.
