Regular season ends for Arlington's high-school football teams

Washington-Liberty wins an outright district championship

The regular season ended for Arlington’s four high-school football teams the night of Nov. 3 with different overall results for each.

The most successful story was the Washington-Liberty Generals clinching the outright Liberty District championship thanks to a 41-21 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Wakefield Warriors in an all-Arlington clash. The Generals finished 9-1 overall (their most wins in a season since 1975) and 5-1 in the league, to earn their first such title since winning the National District in 2013.

In addition, Washington-Liberty won the unofficial Arlington  championship with a 2-0 record over its two county rivals this fall, and will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming eight-team 6D North Region postseason tournament.

With the loss, Wakefield finished 0-10 for the second straight season and 0-6 in the district.

Wakefield led W-L 21-10 in the first half and 21-18 halftime, then was out outscored 23-0 in the second half.

Arlington’s Yorktown Patriots (6-4, 3-3) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the visiting Herndon Hornets, 14-3, in a Liberty District contest and clinch a region-playoff berth as the No. 7 seed.

The region berth is Yorktown’s third straight and sixth in the last seven seasons.

Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson said the win made what has been a frustrating season a bit better. The Patriots’ four losses have been by a total of 16 points.

Arlington’s one private-school football team is the Bishop O’Connell Knights, an injury-riddled squad since the first game of the regular season.

O’Connell led the host St. Paul VI Panthers, 9-0, on Nov. 3 but eventually lost, 30-9, as turnovers were costly for the Knights. Their season ends with a 3-7 overall record and 0-4 mark in the Metro Division of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and they missed the league’s playoffs.
