Yorktown High School golfers Riley Scheffel and Katherine Snyder were two of 10 players from the school who played in Northern Virginia Zone A qualifying event for the Girls State Open tournament.

There were 13 players from Arlington high school teams who participated in this year’s annual Northern Virginia Zone A qualifier event for the Virginia High School League’s Girls State Open golf tournament.

The qualifier was Oct. 16 on the par-72 Lakes Course at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton.

The Arlington player with the lowest score was Malia Perry of Washington-Liberty High School with an 88. Next lowest was Yorktown’s Ainsley Gary with a 93, followed by teammates Ginger Beall with a 94, Maddie Cameron with a 96 and Ellie McCracken with 97.

Wakefield High School’s Sophia Sadler shot 98.

None of those Arlington golfers qualified for the Girls State Open. Players with scores of 81 or lower, 11 in all, did qualify.

Langley High School senior Alina Ho shot 68 to win the event, and her teammate,  Catherine Qiu, shot 72 and was second.

There were 10 players from Yorktown, two from W-L and one from Wakefield who played in the qualifier.

“We’ve always had a few, but this year having 10 players are the most we’ve had in this event,” Yorktown coach Chris Williams said.
