The Wakefield Warriors fell to 0-3 with a 34-9 home loss to the Yorktown Patriots on Sept. 8 in an all-Arlington high-school football clash between Liberty District teams.

In victory, Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson praised Wakefield, which finished 0-10 last season, losing by blowout in most games. He said the team is improved under new head coach Clarence Martin.

“They are greatly improved and have a real team. Their student fans were way pumped up for the game, singing and doing things like ours do,” Hanson said. “Their players hustle around and are enthusiastic. They have a nice attack offensively with a five-wide [receivers] set and have a pretty good quarterback. They hit a lot of short passes.”

With all of that, Yorktown still won big, mainly by running the ball for 222 yards and three touchdowns and passing for 115 more and two TDs.

Wakefield quarterback Peyton Boroff was 22 of 37 passing for 154 yards, with Josh Cohen having seven catches for 35 yards, Andrew Walton four for 39, Chris Gilpin three for 50 and Matthew Johnson two for 11.

Michael Hutchinson was Wakefield’s leading rusher with 44 yards and a short touchdown run and Johnson had 14 yards. Parker Boroff booted a 23-yard field goal for Wakefield’s other points.

On defense, Wakefield’s Michael Anderson had an interception and fumble recovery.
