Arlington Sage 10-under softball team wins another tourney title

Champions won two of their contests in walk-off fashion

The 10-under Arlington Sage won a recent softball tournament with a 4-0 record.

The 10-under Arlington Sage girls softball team won the recent Beltway Barnburner tournament with a 4-0 record. The tourney title was the team’s second of the spring/summer season.

In pool play, the Sage defeated the Stafford Diamonds, 4-3, on a walkoff sacrifice fly by Harper Bryant, with alert baserunning from Grace Porter to score from second base with the winning run.

In their second pool-play game, the Sage edged the Shenandoah Valley Swarm, 7-6, again on a walkoff, with a two-run single from Lilly Johnsen.

In the semifinals on Sunday, the Sage rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to win 5-2 over the Bayside Maryland Blues. A two-run, game-tying single by Avery Ehst in the third inning was a key hit.

In the championship game, the Sage blanked the Post 290 Fredericksburg Bombers, 7-0. Johnsen hurled the complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts. Ella Bryant had two hits. A five-run fifth inning sealed the win.

Other players who contributed were Claire Montminy, Hope Murphy, Vivian McBride, Amelia Grigorescu, Olivia Zuluaga, Anna Rizzolo, Becca Pyser and Clara Probst. Sage coaches were Graham McBride, Julia McBride and Scott Montminy.
