Judge orders Arlington bond referendums placed on Nov. 5 ballot

Package totaling $272 million likely to win easy passage in fall
court

Arlington Circuit Court Chief Judge Judith Wheat made it official on Aug. 1, ordering five local bond referendums to be placed on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Her directive was in response to July 23 County Board action requesting that the $272 million package go before voters.

Court authorization is a necessary but typically pro-forma last step in getting referendums on the ballot. Wheat’s order directed that members of the Arlington Electoral Board and State Board of Elections be formally notified.

Voter approval of the package is a virtual guarantee; the public has not turned down a single Arlington bond issue in more than 40 years and not turned down multiple bonds in a single year in a half-century.

Following Wheat’s signature, referendums on the ballot will be:

• $72.4 million for transportation, including Metro.

• $25.8 million for parks and recreation.

• $76.2 million for community infrastructure.

• $14.2 million for utilities.

• $84 million for schools.
