The Friends of Arlington’s Planetarium is seeking volunteers to serve on its board of directors beginning at the start of the new year.
“No prior experience or special science knowledge is required, though interest in both science and education are desired,” organization leaders said. Board members serve three-year terms.
The group is dedicated to supporting the public-school-system planetarium in Arlington and promoting science education for the general public. It raises funds to sponsor a college scholarship and grants for teacher professional development, and also helps purchase program licenses and supports the creation of original programming for the planetarium.
The board holds monthly meetings on Zoom, and the total workload is several hours per month. “Enthusiasm and a willingness to be actively involved on various projects are the primary requirements of the position,” the organization notes.

The planetarium, which dates to the 1960s, is now named to honor David Brown, a Yorktown High School graduate, physician, U.S. Navy officer and astronaut who died in the 2003 explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia over Texas.
The planetarium was shuttered during renovation of the former Arlington Education Center, located next door on North Quincy Street, and then owing to the pandemic. At its reopening in the fall of 2022, the facility sported both a new projector and a new director.
