No surprises, election-wise, in the two state Senate seats that between them encompass Arlington in the upper house of the state legislature.

Incumbents Barbara Favola and Adam Ebbin were running up easy victories over Republican challengers David Henshaw and Sophia Moshaha, respectively.

Favola had been serving on the Arlington County Board when she first was elected to the Senate in 2011. Ebbin also was elected to the state Senate in 2011, but has a slight seniority edge over Favola owing to his previous service in the House of Delegates..

In redistricting completed after the 2020 federal census, Arlington went from being part of three Senate districts to being part of two. (The third senator whose district had up to now included Arlington, Janet Howell, did not seek re-election this year.)

Favola’s new district (the 40th) comprises the vast majority of Arlington’s geography and does not include any precincts outside the county. Ebbin’s new district (the 39th) remains centered on Alexandria, but as before has some precincts in the southern part of Arlington.

Favola easily defeated a challenger who ran somewhat to her left in the June Democratic primary. Ebbin was unopposed for nomination.
