Suspect charged with assault on police after allegedly shoplifting

On Sept. 18 at 3:38 p.m., a man entered a business in the 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard and allegedly began concealing merchandise, Arlington police said.

After an employee confronted him, the suspect allegedly exited the store without payment and fled on foot, police said.

A lookout was broadcast and a responding officer located a person matching the suspect’s description in the Clarendon Metro station. The officer issued commands to the suspect, who reportedly was noncompliant and actively resisted arrest, during which the suspect allegedly grabbed the officer, police said.

With the assistance of additional responding officers, the suspect was taken into custody, police said. The suspect sustained minor injuries but refused medical attention, police said.

The suspect – 29-year-old Antonni Florez-Diaz of no fixed address – was arrested and charged with assault on police, shoplifting, obstruction of justice, possession of Schedule III/IV/V/VI substance and public intoxication. He was held without bond.
