ROBBERY:
• On July 20 at 8:36 p.m., officers responded to a report of an alarm at a business in the 3600 block of Columbia Pike, Arlington police said.
Upon arrival, it was determined the male suspect entered the business and attempted to pay for cigarettes, during which the transaction was unsuccessful, police said. The suspect then made threatening statements toward an employee, implied he was carrying a weapon, stole the cigarettes and exited the store without payment, police said.
No injuries were reported.
Responding officers canvassed the area for the suspect, yielding negative results. The suspect is described as a black male, 40 years old.
• On July 20 at 11:08 p.m., a man entered a store in the 4600 block of Washington Boulevard, collected merchandise and allegedly exited without payment, Arlington police said.
An employee confronted the suspect outside the business; during the incident, the suspect allegedly struck the employee before fleeing the scene on foot, police said.
The employee sustained minor injuries and was treated by medics on scene.
A lookout for the suspect was broadcast. Responding officers observed an individual matching the suspect’s description in the area of North Glebe Road and 14th Street North, police said.
Officers issued commands to the individual, who was non-compliant, police said. With the assistance of additional responding officers, he was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for medical evaluation.
The suspect – 40-year-old Kevin Singleton of no fixed address – was arrested and charged with robbery and obstruction of justice. He was held without bond.
• On July 21 at 5:45 a.m., three men entered a business in the 400 block of 23rd Street South, Arlington police said.
The first suspect jumped over the counter and, when confronted by an employee, implied he had a weapon, police said. The suspects then stole cash drawers and cartons of cigarettes, police said.
When the employee again attempted to confront the robbers, the first suspect lurched at him before all three departed the scene in a red sedan, police said.
No injuries were reported.
The suspects are described as black males, 20 to 30 years old.
• On July 22 at 3:09 p.m., two men entered a business in the 1200 block of South Fern Street, broke display cases with a hammer and collected merchandise before leaving without payment, Arlington police said.
As the suspects were exiting, one suspect threatened an employee with the hammer before fleeing the scene on foot, police said.
No injuries were reported.
The suspects are described as a black male, 21 to 25 years old, 5’5” or 5’6”, with a beard, and a black male, 21 to 25 years old, 5’6” to 5’8”, with black dreadlocks.
• On July 22 at 5:24 p.m., a man entered a business in the 900 block of Army Navy Drive, concealed merchandise and attempted to leave when confronted by loss-prevention personnel, Arlington police said.
The suspect then shoved the loss-prevention staff member, returned the merchandise and fled the scene on foot, police said.
No injuries were reported.
The suspect is described as a black male, 40 to 50 years old, 5’10”.
• On July 23 at 9:45 a.m., a woman was inside a residential building in the 300 block of North George Mason Drive when a man known to her entered and engaged her in conversation, Arlington police said.
The suspect subsequently assaulted the victim, stole her personal belongings and exited the building, police said.
The victim then confronted the suspect outside, and the suspect stole the victim’s phone and threw it on the ground, causing damage, before fleeing the scene in a white sedan, police said.
No injuries were reported.
During the investigation, officers identified the suspect and obtained warrants for robbery, assault-and-battery and destruction of property. The investigation is ongoing.
• On July 25 at 8:29 a.m., a man entered a business in the 4200 block of Wilson Boulevard, collected merchandise and, when confronted by an employee, allegedly struck him with the merchandise and kicked him before exiting the store without payment, Arlington police said.
No serious injuries were reported.
The suspect is described as a black male, 25 to 30 years old, 5’10”.
IMPERSONATING LAW ENFORCEMENT:
• On July 24 at 9:53 a.m., a woman was inside her home in the 2900 block of South Grant Street when a man allegedly entered, displayed a military identification and demanded her vehicle, Arlington police said.
The victim refused and the suspect subsequently exited the home and proceeded to try the door handles of three unoccupied, parked vehicles in the area, police said. The suspect reportedly told the owner of one of the vehicles he needed the vehicle for military business.
Responding officers located the suspect – 24-year-old Dayan Balderrama of Woodbridge – and took him into custody. He was charged with impersonating a law-enforcement officer (two counts), vehicle tampering (two counts), attempted robbery and burglary, and was held without bond.
RECKLESS HANDLING OF FIREARM:
• On July 25 at 2:18 p.m., a man was cleaning a firearm inside his residence in the 600 block of North Glebe Road when the weapon discharged, Arlington police said.
Damage was caused to the interior of the home, but no injuries or further damage were reported.
A 28-year-old Arlington man was charged with reckless handling of a firearm and released on a summons.
INDECENT EXPOSURE:
• On July 19 at 5:07 p.m., several women were inside a business in the 4000 block of Campbell Avenue when a man allegedly exposed himself to them from outside.
The suspect then left the scene.
The suspect is described as a black male, in his mid-30s, 5’8” or 5’9”, wearing all-black clothing.
• On July 20 at 4:29 a.m., an officer allegedly observed a man in the 1400 block of Wilson Boulevard exposing himself, Arlington police said.
The suspect – 29-year-old Kenyar Sheppard of no fixed address – was arrested and charged with indecent exposure and public intoxication. He was held without bond.
• On July 21 at 5:30 p.m., a woman observed a man exposing himself outside a business in the 2700 block of South Arlington Mill Drive, Arlington police said.
A responding officer located the suspect on scene and made contact with him, during which the suspect became non-compliant with the officer’s commands and fled the scene on foot, police said.
The officer located the suspect again in the 2800 block of South Quincy Street and issued additional commands, police said The suspect remained non-compliant and the officer deployed a Taser. The suspect then was taken into custody.
The suspect – 43-year-old Dejuan Douglas, 43, of Alexandria – was arrested and charged with public masturbation and obstruction of justice. He was held without bond.
BURGLARY:
• On July 23 at 6:53 a.m., a witness observed a man attempt to enter a secure building in the 6000 block of Wilson Boulevard before leaving the scene on foot, Arlington police said.
No items were reported stolen.
The suspect is described as an Hispanic male, 30 to 40 years old.
STOLEN VEHICLE:
• Arlington County police on July 22 reported four vehicles stolen in recent days.
On July 19, a blue 2017 Toyota Corolla with Virginia plates was reported stolen from the 2800 block of 9th Street South. On July 20, a blue 2012 Vespa Ciao moped with no license plate was reported stolen from the 2000 block of North Adams Street.
On July 21, a white 2017 Chevrolet Impala with Maryland plates was reported stolen from the 1300 block of South Eads Street, and a white 2012 Yamaha moped with Virginia plates was reported stolen from the 800 block of South Greenbrier Street.
• On July 23, Arlington police reported that a silver 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan with Virginia plates was reported stolen from the 2000 block of North Cameron Street and a white 2018 Honda Civic with Virginia plates was reported stolen from the 1300 block of Army Navy Drive.
• On July 25, Arlington police reported that, a day before, a white 2016 Acura RDX with Maryland plates had been reported stolen from the 3700 block of South Four Mile Run Drive.
ARLINGTON ARRESTS UP IN JUNE, DOWN FOR FIRST HALF OF YEAR:
• Despite an uptick in June, the total number of arrests made by the Arlington County Police Department during the first half of 2024 was down from 2023, according to new figures.
For the six-month period, a total of 1,598 arrests were made (1,505 adults plus 93 juveniles) in 2024. That compares to 1,611 (1,499 + 112) during the same period in 2023 and 1,315 (1,266 + 49) in 2022.
Figures represent the total number of individuals arrested, not the total number of charges levied.
In June, there were 273 arrests made (262 adults plus 11 youth) compared to 259 (244 + 15) in 2023 and 239 (224 + 15) in 2022.
Also in June, police issued 2,230 citations and warnings, and responded to 140 vehicular crashes including one with serious injuries and eight involving pedestrians.
