Students from Arlington Public Schools’ Escuela Key on Nov. 16 participated in the kickoff of a new U.S. Department of Education initiative called “Being Bilingual is a Superpower.”
“Escuela Key students really shined at the event, and we’re so proud of them for representing APS and their school so well,” county school leaders said.
The event was part of a push to promote bilingualism among U.S. students.
“Knowing more than one language, acquiring a new language through school, or learning new languages later in life can provide tangible academic, cognitive, economic and sociocultural advantages,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.
Founded in 1986 at what then was Key Elementary School, Escuela Key provides dual-immersion (English-Spanish) education to students up to fifth grade. In 2021, the school’s name officially was changed to Escuela Key after moving to a new building on North Edison Street.
