Arlington County Board Chairman Libby Garvey professed herself pleased with the results of a Feb. 5 kickoff event, leading into a year’s worth of activities to envision what the county should look like in the year 2050.

The event, held at a venue owned by Amazon and drawing an invited crowd, was a strong start to the initiative, Garvey said in wrapping it up.

“I knew it was going to be – it is even better than I thought,” Garvey said of the two-hour event, which featured speakers, a light dinner for attendees and then brainstorming sessions.

Garvey announced plans for the visioning initiative when she was tapped by her colleagues in early January to chair the board for 2024.

It will be the last year in office for Garvey, who has announced she does not plan to seek re-election to a post she has held since 2012.

In remarks at the Feb. 5 kickoff, Garvey said Arlington had many advantages to bring to the year’s activities.

“We’re a big, diverse community and we all get along pretty well,” she said.

Two days later, on Feb. 7, Garvey further sketched out her goals during remarks to the Arlington County Democratic Committee. She said the kickoff was a chance to “get everybody’s intellectual juices going.”

(Arlington being Arlington, it has been decided that a consultant will be hired to help guide the process.)
