Yorktown's Grayson McCarthy started and pitched four innings against Bishop O'Connell in local high-school baseball action.

It would have been bigger news had the Arlington school system opted out, but in fact it has opted to remain a member of the Virginia High School League.

School Board members on July 8 approved membership for the school system and individually for Yorktown, Wakefield and Washington-Liberty high schools.

Schools are assessed fees of $800, plus $35 per varsity activity and $5.50 per student involved in activities (for insurance coverage). Projected costs for the 2024-25 school year are $7,507 for Yorktown, $7,581 for Wakefield and $8,982 for Washington-Liberty. Payment by Virginia’s participating school divisions is due Aug. 1.

Though most known for organizing state high-school athletics, Virginia High School League also oversees student activities ranging from theater and media to debate and robotics.
