Avery Cañedo, a rising senior at James Madison High School and member of Girl Scout Troop 6891 in Vienna, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award in June.

The Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouts and only 5.4 percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the award.

Cañedo’s Gold Award project was an awareness campaign called “Happie Nappies” that shared information about the economic, environmental and health benefits of reusable diapers. She exhibited at many community events to interact with and educate her target audience and co-hosted a sustainable products workshop with Mala Persaud, owner of Trace the Zero Waste Store in Vienna.
