For the third straight season, the Madison Warhawks have reached the semifinals of the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 girls state softball tournament.
The host Warhawks (21-4) advanced the final four by defeating the Robinson Rams, 4-1, in an evening first-round game June 4 in Vienna. The victory was the team’s 20th in a row.
Like it did in the 6D North Region tournament championship game, Madison fell behind in the state opener, 1-0, then took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Sofia Marshall doubled, had two of Madison’s six hits and drove in two runs. Single hits went to Ayla Condill, Riley Brick (double), Lucy Griepentrog (double) and Johanna Hostetler (double).
On the mound, Ava Livingston threw a complete-game two-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk for Madison.
The Warhawks are scheduled to face the Battlefield Bobcats (23-2) in a 1 p.m. semifinal game Friday, June 7 at Deep Run High School in the Richmond area. Battlefield has won 15 games in a row.
Madison is trying to win its 10th state championship, the last coming in 2022. The Warhawks were second in the state last season. They have finished second in the state five times.
