Tuckahoe swimmers prevail in key NVSL Division 1 showdown

Overlee also 3-0 in top division; Kent Gardens, Cardinal Hill in first

With an 8-4 edge in the relay races, after each team won 20 individual events, the visiting Tuckahoe Tigers topped the Chesterbrook Tiger Sharks, 238-182, the morning of June 29 in a Northern Virginia Swimming League Division 1 first-place showdown between the perennial powers and McLean rivals.

Tuckhoe is tied for first at 3-0 with Arlington’s Overlee Flying Fish. Defending champion Chesterbrook fell to 2-1. Chesterbrook won the 2022 Division 1 championship.

Overlee defeated host Old Keene Mill, 254-166, in June 29 action.

For Tuckahoe in the win, the boys won five of six relays to give the Tigers the edge.

Double winners in individual events for Tuckahoe were Liam Laudier, Vivi Passos-Androvic, Hunter Zipperer, Catherine Hughes, Victor Rodriguez and Grant Nielsen. Single winners were Andrew Pelaez, Hugo Haggard, Max Waisberg, Isaac Bell, Bella Spignardo, Gabi Rodriguez, Bella Cota-Robles and Danielle Hughes.

Catherine Hughes set a Tuckahoe record in girls 15-18 backstroke, breaking her own record with a new mark of 29.71.

For Chesterbrook, double winners were Maddox Cory, Mara Wilson and Cameron Parkhomenko. Single winners were Kathllen Bhulli, Andrew Shundi, McKenzie Cory, Gabrielle Cohen, Emma Maher, Jackie Furches, Ilan Schiff, Kate Talbert, Lily Wilson, Ashley Shen, Manu Maher, Ezra Landsman and Kate Talbert. 

Maher set a team record (35.2) in the girls 9-10 back and the girls 13-14 back (29.72).

For Overlee in its victory, double winners were Will Cravens, Holden Busen, Abigail Hartman, Samantha Bravery, Violet Mullen and McKinley Busen. Single winners were Brendan Finnerty, Charleigh Cravens, Keegan Murdock, James Parker, Claire Cocker, Frederick Papadopoulos, Billy Weber, Jay Young, Mary Pickens, Sia Nicholakos, Sully Portner, Evan Ingraham and Olivia Hartel.

Also in a June 29 Division 1 meet, Arlington’s Donaldson Run Thunderbolts (1-2) topped McLean’s Highlands Whomping Turtles (0-3) by a 211.5-208.5 scores.

For Donaldson Run, Rachel Conley, Christian Jacobs, Kate Edgerton, Caroline Baca, Ellie Wertzler and Avery Wishneff were double winners. Single winners were Hunter Simms,  Theo Cahill, Mitchell Robinson, Mikey Maloney, Miles Ledfor, Annie Madden, Pippa Chin-Fatt, Charlie Greenwood, Finley McDonnell, Nora Sherman and Micah Utz.

For Highlanders, double winners were Reid Bittenbender, Gabriel Hanson, Mackey Tolar and Luke Zemek. Single winners were Gigi Dent, Evan Farley, Lucas Hanson, Jacob Owen, Curan Palmer, Charlie Scogna, Abby Taylor and Rio Walther.

• In Division 2 NVSL action June 29, the Oakton Otters (2-1) lost for the first time, falling to first-place Crosspointe (3-0), 239-181, and the Langley Wildthings (2-1) downed the McLean Marlins (0-2), 251-165.

• In Division 3 of the NVSL, the Kent Gardens Dolphins remained in first place with a 3-0 recod with a 215-205 win over Fair Oaks on June 29. The team set nine race records in the victory.

Double winners for Kent Gardens were Miles Bamberger, Hadley Nguyen, Nora Jia, Aaron Kuang, Caroline King, Andy Li, Teagan King, Sloane Nguyen and Sophie Fredericks. Single winners were Emma Bui and Tessa Skochko.

• In Division 5 of the NVSL on June 29, the Cardinal Hill Cardinals (2-1) remained in a three-way tie for first place despite a 228-192 loss to Sleepy Holly Recreation.

Double winners for the Cardinals were Ziva McHenry, Anika Patel, Kayden Chen and Calvin Butler. Single winners were Emmett Sanderson, Katherine Monahan, Oliver Jahshan, Megan Dean, Theo Weisbruch, Max Ma, Eric Chen, Mishi Roper, Becca Berg and Andrew Beck.
