With a standout college career nearly completed, Kathryn Sandercock, the McLean resident and Bishop O’Connell High School graduate, soon may have the opportunity to begin her next big softball endeavor – on the professional ranks.
In recent days, the fifth-year Florida State University ace pitcher was selected by the Texas Smoke of Austin in the draft by the second-year Women’s Professional Fastpitch league. The league begins play June 15, with the regular season lasting until Aug. 7.
If she chooses to join that professional team, the right-hander first has to finish her final season for Florida State, sometime in May or possibly June.
Through April 18 action this spring, Sandercock had a 15-3 record with five saves and a 1.06 earned run average. In 1052/3 innings, she has walked just 11 and struck out 67 in 28 appearances. Sandercock has pitched six complete games.
For her college career so far, Sandercock has a 94-11 record, a 1.48 earned run average, has thrown 6302/3 innings and already is the team’s all-time leader in career saves.
At the end of the 2021 season, she was chosen to the College World Series all-tournament team, helped Florida State finished second that year. Sandercock already is a three-time All-American and a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection.
At O’Connell, Sandercock helped pitch and hit the Knights to multiple conference and state championships, set numerous team pitching and hitting records and was chosen all-state a number of times.
As a McLean Little League softball player, Sandercock helped the Majors all-stars win district, state and region titles and reach the Little League World Series.
