The Marshall Statesmen had not yet won a game this season when the week began, but the girls high-school softball team certainly had been involved in a number of close and entertaining contests.

The most recent was a 13-12 extra-inning home loss to the Yorktown Patriots in a Liberty District action last week. Marshall fell behind 6-0 in the first inning, then immediately began battling back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame as leadoff batter and starting shortstop Taylor DeVanney was one of the players leading the offensive attack, along with Carmen Musallam, who had a first-inning extra base hit.

In other close or high-scoring games this season, Marshall lost to Edison, 10-9, McLean, 3-2, and Herndon, 17-10.

Other top hitters in the game against Yorktown were, Tallulah Grivet, Emily Manifor, Lindsey Manifor, Fiona Rodham, Alicia Collins-Lueckenhoff and Rilee Davies.

Davies and Marissa Sherman did the pitching.
