With another second-half comeback victory, it was deja vu all over again for the undefeated Marshall Statesmen (7-0) in an early-season neighborhood rivalry game against the visiting Madison Warhawks.
Marshall won the Dec. 15 boys high-school basketball clash, 54-47, inside the Statesmen's packed small gym, including two large and loud student sections.
Marshall trailed 31-28 at halftime, then outscored the Warhawks (2-5) 14-6 in the third to take the lead for good, leading 42-37 at quarter's end.
Marshall senior shooting wing Jose Fudd led the rally by making four of his six three-pointers in the second half, two in each period. One of his threes early in the third quarter ignited an 8-0 Marshall run, ending with a three-point play by Jason Penn that gave the Statesmen the lead for good at 36-33.
In the fourth quarter, Fudd made two long threes to keep Marshall in the lead by 49-45 and 52-47 scores.
Fudd scored a game-high 20 points, making his final six three-point attempts without a miss, and added seven rebounds. Penn scored 14 and had four boards.
Also for Marshall, Omar Phillips had six points, Andrew Tanaka had two points, six assists and four rebounds, and Anderson Krisko had four points and two boards.
Madison shot poorly in the second half from the floor, making 8 of 25 attempts, and missed two foul shots that would have completed three-point plays.
Darren Knicely had 14 points and four rebounds for Madison, Hobbes Fiel scored nine with three rebounds, Ryan Furlong scored eight and William Chappell five. Noah Baker had four points, six rebounds and three assists. Mason Burger made a three-pointer.
The game included four ties and as many lead changes.
In last season's regular-season game between the rivals, Madison led 37-30 at halftime, then Marshall rallied to win, 46-45. Madison again shot poorly in the second half of that contest. Fudd made four threes in the win and scored 14 and Penn made the game-winning layup.
In Marshall's two previous games, Fudd scored 22, Penn 18 and Phillips nine in a win over Falls Church and Fudd had 15, Ethan Santos and Trey Lonardo eight each and Rishab Saravanan six against Justice.
