Marshall High School will host its first Statesmen Invitational golf tournament, scheduled for Aug. 15 at Bristow Manor Golf Club in Prince William County.

The 18-hole event will consist of 16 teams and begin at 9:30 a.m.

In addition to Marshall, other local teams participating include the Washington-Liberty Generals, Wakefield Warriors, McLean Highlanders, Madison Warhawks and Oakton Cougars.

Host Marshall will be led by senior Owen McCarton, who has recorded rounds of 77 and 79 in previous tournaments so far during the early stages of the 2024 high-school season.

McCarton is the top returner on the team this season. The other top five players from last season graduated.

“We thought holding a tournament would be a good fundraiser for our program, and Bristow Manor was available,” Marshall coach John Windt said.

Heritage, Independence, Riverside and Loudoun County high-school teams from Loudoun County are among others entered.

In other golf news involving Marshall, its nine-hole Aug. 21 dual match with neighborhood rival Madison High will be played at Westwood Country Club in Vienna at 3:30 p.m. The match will be sponsored by the Hawk & Griffin pub of Vienna.

The pub will provide a plaque or trophy of some kind that will be awarded to the winning team.

“We are kind of rebuilding this year, and Madison is much better. That’s always a good neighborhood match and it will be fun for all of the players,” Windt said.
