Marshall football team snaps losing streak, tops Wakefield

Madison has a bye week; Oakton defeated on road

The Marshall Statesmen defeated the Wakefield Warriors, 21-3, in Liberty District football action the night of Oct. 13.

• The Marshall Statesmen (4-4, 1-3) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 21-3 road victory over the Wakefield Warriors in a Liberty District afternoon football game on Oct. 14.

In the win for Marshall, quarterback Ian Olson threw two touchdown passes to Derek Lenert (three catches, 127 yards) and CarterMichael Oketunji scored on a nine-yard run. Lenert also ran for a two-point conversion.

Marshall led 6-0 at halftime, then scored a touchdown each in the final two periods.

Kevin Aleman ran for 56 yards for Marshall. Olson completed just the three passes to Lenert. He was intercepted multiple times.

On defense for Marshall, Michael Morgan had an interception. The Statesmen held winless Wakefield (0-8, 0-4) to 138 total yards).

• The undefeated Madison Warhawks (7-0, 2-0) had a bye and did not play last week. The Warhawks are scheduled to return to action with a home Concorde District showdown with the also undefeated South Lakes Seahawks (7-0, 2-0) on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in Vienna.

South Lakes has been a high-scoring football team this season, averaging 49 points per game, but has played just one team with a winning record. In contrast, four of Madison’s opponents have winning records. •

The Oakton Cougars (1-6, 0-2) lost to the host South Lakes Seahawks 56-18, Oct. 13 in a Concorde District high-school football game. Ihab Raihanoune threw touchdown passes of 15 and 47 yards to John Mead in the loss and a 20-yarder to Josh Barber in the final seconds.

Oakton never led, falling behind 21-0 to the undefeated Seahawks (7-0, 3-0).

The loss extended Oakton’s losing streak against district opponents to 26 games dating back to the 2017 season.
