The host Madison Warhawks dominated the Jefferson Colonials, 4-0, the night of June 4 to advance to the semifinals of the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 girls state soccer tournament.
The final score for the first-round match reflected Madison’s effort throughout the match. Although all four goals were scored in the second half, Madison (16-2-1) kept the ball on Jefferson’s side of the field for the majority of the game, as the Warhawks won for the seventh straight time.
Madison managed to continuously push past Jefferson’s defense to create breakaways.
Madison’s Lillian Perkins led the majority of those rushes, using her speed to advance the ball toward the goal. Sidney DeLacy and Hannah Harms used breakaways to their advantage and became a dangerous combination.
The Warhawks continued their momentum in the second half, breaking free with four goals.
Sidney DeLacy scored two goals, with Harms assisting on both. Harms had her own goal. Daphne Van Der Weide also had one goal.
Madison goalie Erinn Lockard earned the shutout.
Madison coach Zahir Hassan attributed the win to the team’s patience.
“We just had to be patient, Hassan said. “We know we have goals coming, we just can’t panic. Even though we expect a win, we still have to play the game. We can’t panic, and when the goals weren’t coming, we were pushing, pushing, pushing. We just had to say, ‘Hey, we didn’t get here by luck, we got here because of how we play. We stayed true to our DNA.’ ”
Madison will face the undefeated Freedom Eagles of South Riding in a state semifinal match today, June 7, at 1:30 p.m. at Deep Run High School in the Richmond area. The state final is Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. at Mills Godwin High in Richmond.
