After giving up a long touchdown drive early in the game against the Marshall Statesmen, the Madison Warhawks defense did not allow a point the rest of the way in the team's 35-7 home win Sept. 21.

The Madison Warhawks won impressively again and now stand 4-0, but the high-school football team was victorious in its most recent triumph after falling behind for the first time this fall.

Madison defeated the visiting Marshall Statesmen, 35-7, the night of Sept. 21 in the annual non-district Vienna Rotary Bowl trophy game, but trailed 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Madison defense tightened after that, recovering three fumbles and holding Marshall to just 93 total yards.

The four-time defending 6D North Region champion Warhawks took control in the second quarter by scoring 22 points, then added a touchdown in each of the third and fourth periods.

Leading Madison on offense were quarterback Cael Yates and runningbacks Matthew Weiler and Dominic Knicely.

Yates rushed for 45 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 136 yards and two more scores, including one to Knicely, who had five catches for 59 yards and he ran for another 59. Weiler ran for 62 yards and a TD and he caught two passes for 16. Harry Lewis caught a 16-yard scoring pass and Jay Pendry had a catch for 28 yards. Lewis also caught a two-point conversion pass from Andrew Rowan and July Hopewell booted three extra points.

Madison had 296 total yards, 17 first downs and no turnovers.

On defense for Madison, Caden Green had a tackle and 10 assists. Luke Salvosa, Heath Tunstall, Charlie Backman, Oscar Espanol, Alex Gates, Otis Casey, Matt Vojta and Jack Ambruzs were other tackling leaders. Joseph Gore recovered two fumbles and Salvosa one.

For Marshall, quarterback Michael Spriggs scored on and eight-yard scoring run in the first quarter and Jihwan Park added the extra point, giving the Statesmen a 7-0 lead with 5:04 left in the first half. Ethan Lebkisher had 63 yards rushing for Marshall and Spriggs completed a pass to Oliver Smith.
