The season continued for the two-time defending champion Madison Warhawks while ending for the McLean Highlanders in first-round action of the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 boys state lacrosse tournament.
* Host Madison (15-5) defeated the West Potomac Wolverines, 17-8, while McLean (13-7) lost to the host and undefeated Robinson Rams, 15-5, in May 31 contests.
The win was the 10th in a row for Madison, which will face the host Battlefield Bobcats (18-1) in a state semifinal match, Tuesday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Haymarket. Battlefield also has won 10 straight times.
Madison was led in the first-round win by the scoring of senior brothers Mark and Will Rubley. Duncan Craddock, Caleb Smith, Henry Maiden, Evan Barry and Levi Wentz also were heavily involved in the offense for the Warhawks, either scoring goals or assisting on goals.
If Madison defeats Battlefield, the Warhawks will face either Robinson or Deep Run (13-5) in the June 8 state-championship match at 10 a.m. in the Richmond area.
Madison is trying to win its fourth state championship, having also won the crown in 2019.
* McLean tied its first-round state match against Robinson at 1 early in the first quarter. The Rams answered with four straight goals to build a 5-1 lead and were comfortably ahead the rest of the way. Robinson improved to 22-0.
Robinson led 9-3 at halftime and 13-4 after three periods.
Bryce Kojac had two goals and one assist for McLean. Max Mullen, Ethan Jones and Kaelan Ferris netted the other goals. Isaac Bell and Matthew Mock had assists.
McLean was playing in the state tournament for the first time in program history. The Highlanders earned the berth by reaching the championship match of the 6D North Region tournament, where it lost that contest to Madison.
