Rob Hahne had not planned to return to coaching high-school baseball so soon, if at all. But plans changed when the only position he said he’d consider making such a quick comeback for became vacant in recent weeks.
Hahne thought about the opportunity, eventually applied, then July 11 was hired as Langley High School’s new head coach. Hahne had unique interest in the position because he graduated from Langley in 1987, where he was a standout player, plus he grew up in that neighborhood. Hahne was a McLean Little League and local Babe Ruth standout prior to high school.
“I’m ready for this and I’m excited,” Hahne said.
Hahne stepped down as the head coach of the Westfield High School baseball team after the 2023 season, when his Bulldogs won a region championship and finished second in the state. His Westfield teams regularly were among the best in the Concorde District and 6D North Region.
“I thought I was retired from high-school coaching, then the Langley job opened and it was the only job I would consider taking,” Hahne said. “Coming here is exciting to have the chance to impact the baseball community where I grew up.”
Hahne’s brother, Jeff, has been Langley’s head junior-varsity coach in recent seasons, and will remain on the staff.
“It’s pretty cool to get him here to coach,” Langley director of student activities Geoff Nato said.
At Langley, Rob Hahne replaces Jared Sronce, who had coached the Saxons since 2019. Langley finished 12-8 last season, reaching the region tournament.
By taking over as Langley’s head coach, Hahne adds to a busy baseball resume. He’s the executive director of the Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League, is on various baseball boards of directors, is the chair of the Fairfax County Baseball Council, is heavily involved with the summertime college Potomac League, runs the annual multi-team Memorial Day Kyle’s Camp tournament and remains involved in other organizations.
“Baseball is all I do, so I’m used to this,” Hahne said.
In coming days, Hahne plans to meet with every player in the Langley program on the varsity and junior-varsity levels.
Hahne previously coached with Langley for one season as an assistant in 1994. He then worked at Chantilly High for two seasons as an assistant.
Hahne once was involved with local American Legion summertime baseball teams as a coach and manager, and headed the Potomac Generals travel program.
In college, Hahne was a baseball standout at Division I Elon College in North Carolina.
