Langley High School finished fifth in the final Virginia High School League’s Class 6 standings for the statewide and year-long  girls and boys National Guard Cup athletic competition for the 2023-24 school campaign.

Langley amassed 275 total points – 125 during the fall season, 50 in the winter and 100 for the spring. Battlefield High of Manassas won the overall Class 6 competition with 370 points.

Started in 1990, the competition consists of a point system for sports teams from all 35 sports that place from first to eighth in state tournaments during the fall, winter and spring seasons. A state champion receives 50 points, a runner-up 45, a third-place finisher 40, and so on, with an eighth-place earning 15 points.

Langley amassed its points because girls cross country, golf, girls volleyball, boys swimming and girls and boys tennis teams won or placed high in state events.

McLean High School finished 10th in the team standings with 227.5 points, with 162.5 coming in the spring sparked by teams winning a state baseball title, finishing second in boys soccer and doing well in boys lacrosse and tennis.

Madison High was 12th in the standings (210 points) with Yorktown High 15th (180 points).

Madison boys lacrosse, soccer and softball teams had strong spring seasons.

Three Yorktown girls teams won state championships in field hockey, swimming and diving and lacrosse.
