Taking advantage of four turnovers, the Langley Saxons improved to 2-0 with a 21-0 home victory over the Herndon Hornets in Liberty District high-school football action Aug. 31.
The win gave the defending district champions a 1-0 league record.
One of those turnovers was a third-quarter 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by Cannon Clarke. In the first half, Clarke had a one-yard scoring run after an interception by Chandler Bowles was returned to the one-yard line.
Robert Roncskevitz ran for two yards for Langley’s other TD.
The game was pretty even as far as total yards, with Langley having 228 and Herndon 212.
"Those interceptions were massive," Langley coach David Murray said. "Our defense was strong and kept it up for the whole game. Our defensive coordinator had a great game plan."
With the defense playing so well, Murray kept things conservative on offense.
"That was maybe the most conservative game I've ever called, because we didn't want to call anything risky with our defense doing so well," Murray said.
Langley quarterback Cole Samburg passed for 120 yards. Roncskevitz rushed for 39 and caught two passes for 24. Christopher Bergloff had two catches for 46, Blake Thompson two for six and Clarke one for 34.
On defense, Clarke had three tackles for losses and Roncskevitz two. Clarke, Roncskevitz, Mikhail Iakovlev, Gannon Pascual and Owen Slamowitz were leading tacklers.
