Kent Gardens swimmer sets new 50-yard NVSL backstroke record

Kent Gardens swimmer Sophie Fredericks set a new Northern Virginia Swimming League record during a June 22 meet.

Kent Gardens Dolphins Sophie Fredericks set a new Northern Virginia Swimming League record of 26.38 seconds in the 50-yard girls age 15-18 backstroke during the team’s June 22 Division 3 victory over visiting Mantua.

In the same race, Fredericks’ Kent Gardens teammate, Gloria Kuang, swam 26.78 to also break the previous old NVSL record of 26.93, finishing second to Fredericks.

Kuang held that mark of 26.93 set last summer.

Kent Gardens won the meet, 267.5-152.5, to improve to 2-0 and stand along in first place in the division.

Fredericks won two races in the meet ,and Kuang had a first and a second. The two also teamed on a winning relay.

The Kent Gardens pool is one of the few yard pools in the NVSL. Most are meter pools. Two sets of records, for yards and meters, are kept by the NVSL.

Kent Gardens will attempt to improve to 3-0 when it visits Fair Oaks (1-1) on Saturday, June 29 at 9 a.m.
